Prime Video’s post-apocalyptic series Fallout has been on everyone’s watchlist since the studio announced they’d be adapting the iconic videogame franchise. While the hype for the series was to be expected, the Fallout experience at SXSW far exceeded my expectations.
Once through the entrance, you walk into the shanty town of Filly. There wasn’t too much time to wander about because you’re given a quest to complete. You must collect “Nuka Cola” bottle caps in order to survive. If you don’t have bottle caps, you’ll have to fight off a Radroach for food. We used the “Vault 33 Resident Portal (Va.R.P.)” to scavenge things to barter to trade in for bottle caps. It truly makes you feel like an outsider trying to navigate a world you don’t understand much, like the vault dwellers in the actual series who journey to the surface unaware of what they’ll find above.
There was a station where we could trade in a tooth, another to test out our aim, and many more. Everywhere you turned was a photo opp, and we even got to catch a glimpse of Waltor Goggins, who plays Ghoul in the series. This does not include the live performers and citizens of Filly, who never broke character and even gave me a scare or two.

If spending the morning in that activation didn’t get you excited for the series to come, then I don’t know what will. What a way to kick off day 1 of the SXSW festival.
