“I am Groot.”
It’s been almost nine years since we were first introduced to the Guardians of the Galaxy. Our Ravager Star-Lord, aka Quill (Chris Pratt; Jurassic World franchise), sneakily stole the Orb and attempted to sell it before his surrogate father Yondu could get his hands on it. Unfortunately, it also got the attention of Kree warrior Ronan, who wanted the Orb for his lord, Thanos. And so you don’t have to look it up, the Orb held the Power Stone. But, I digress.
This is the film where we first meet Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, Nebula and of course, Groot. Since this first film we’ve seen these characters grow and, in Groot’s case, be reborn. We’ve become part of the Guardians family which leads us to our theory surrounding a scene from this latest installment Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, we witnessed a scene that has sparked a theory among fans — especially this one. During an emotional moment at the end of the film, Groot, who typically only says, “I am Groot,” said, “I love you guys” in a clear and understandable manner. This begs the question: did Groot truly speak?

Our theory is that Groot did not utter those words, but the audience heard them because we’ve become part of the Guardians’ inner circle. Throughout the films, we’ve only ever heard Groot say “I am Groot,” but everyone around him seems to comprehend his meaning.
In this film, Gamora, new Gamora or old Gamora depending on how you view it, couldn’t understand Groot’s speech for the entire duration and even made jokes about it. She thought the rest of the crew were making up the context of his words. However, at the end of the film, after spending considerable time with Groot, she could finally understand him.
We believe that writer and director James Gunn cleverly incorporated this detail to make the audience feel as though we’re part of the Guardians’ family and understand Groot just as they do. This adds an extra layer of emotional depth to the film and makes it even more special as it concludes Gunn’s trilogy.
