Alas, we’ve arrived (remotely) at one of the highest anticipated film festivals of the year — The Fantasia International Film Festival. Fantasia Fest is the largest genre festival that’s filled, largely, with a collection of curated content that centers around horror, sci-fi, and other various concept pieces. Films that make a bold statement from creatives who aren’t afraid to go there. The festival runs from July 14 to August 3 and you can believe we’ll be watching films the entire time. We can hardly contain our excitement but for the sake of time, here are just a few of the films we are stoked to see this year (and feel you’ll enjoy, too).

All Jacked Up And Full Of Worms
Alex Phillips makes his debut with this earthworm horror flick. Marketed as a tiny-budget horror, All Jacked Up And Full Of Worms delivers a twisted story about a maintenance man who stumbles upon hallucinogenic worms which leads down a road of self-destruction and debauchery.

Glorious
Comedy, horror, and sci-fi are said to blend in this world premiere film. Heartbroken Wes (Ryan Kwanten, True Blood) pulls over at a rest stop to plot his next movie. After a drunken night leaves him hungover, he goes to the restroom to puke and is questioned by the person in the next stall. From there, a big sacrifice must be made. The film was acquired by Shudder ahead of its premiere which fuels our curiosity.

The Harbinger
Monique (Gabby Beans, House of Cards) has been quarantined with her father and brother purposely secluded away from town. After a visit from her oldest friend, Mavis (Emily Davis, The Plagiarist), reaches out to share how she’s being tormented in her dreams, trapped in a nightmarish state sometimes for days, Monique drives into the city to visit Mavis. But the dreams that have been haunting Mavis, soon start to haunt Monique along with a demon. The Harbinger.

Opal
Alain Bidard’s sophomore feature film centers around a mystical kingdom blessed with life and abundance. Princess Opal is the source of the magic that protects the realm. According to legend, her happiness is what maintains the land’s prosperity. If sadness takes hold, the kingdom will be ruined. The pressures of a perfect existence begin to weigh on Opal as she seeks an escape from her current life. But at what cost to the people connected to her fortune or misfortune?

Swallowed
Benjamin and Dom are headed for headed to the city of angels with dreams of Ben becoming a professional porn performer. Dom insists he’s straight, but his friendship with Benjamin is co-mingled with sexual tension and an emotional bond. Looking to score some quick cash, they meet up with Alice (Jena Malone, The Ruins) and attempt to smuggle drugs across the border. Alice persuades them to swallow the drugs which we guess is probably not the best idea.

Sissy
Cecelia (Aisha Dee, The Bold Type) is an influencer who runs into an old classmate while running errands at the store. Her friend invites her to a getaway for her bachelorette weekend. After being confronted by her childhood bully, Cecelia (who they constantly refer to as her childhood nickname “Sissy”) is triggered, causing her long-suppressed emotions to errupt which threatens to dismantle the hard work she’s put in to become the person she is today.
This is merely the tip of the iceberg, stay tuned to our coverage of this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival.
