It’s been five years in the making, but Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has finally come to the small screen. In a panel hosted by LOTR fan Stephen Colbert at this year’s Comic-con, producers J.D. Payne, Patrick McKay, and Lindsey Weber shared a new trailer with those in Hall H attendance. The trailer features the beauty of Middle Earth in the Second Age at a time of peace. But, peace cannot last as a new evil begins to gain power. When asked more about the plot, Payne responded, “How far into the darkness would you go to protect the things you care about the most?”
Set 4,000 years before the events of The Hobbit, the series itself is separate from the Peter Jackson films. One distinction noticed right away is the diversity of the cast which allows for more diversity among the peoples of Middle Earth. We’ll see more characters of color, elves with short hair, and a female dwarf complete with a beard, just as Gimli described.
While a few of the characters are familiar, like Galadriel and Elrond, viewers will be treated to new characters, new creatures, and new lands from Tolkein’s universe. When asked about bringing these new characters to the screen, Payne said, “We had the privilege of working with Tolkien scholars. Tolkien gave us all these amazing clues about characters in the Second Age.”
Along with the trailer, the audience in Hall H viewed 5 short clips from the upcoming series. Those clips included scenes with Galadriel and Elrond, Elrond and Prince Durin IV, ancestors of the hobbits, the kingdom of Numenor, and of course an epic battle scene between elves and orcs.
There’s no doubt that The Rings of Power will captivate audiences who are fans of Tolkien’s written works and those who are fans of the previous on-screen adaptations. Get ready for an incredible journey, coming to Prime Video on September 2, 2022. Until then, check out the new trailer below.
