Poor Dom (David Jonsson) is fresh off the heels of a bad breakup with his ex-girlfriend, who cheated on him with his best friend. While ugly-crying in a bathroom stall at his friend’s art installation, he meets Yas (Vivian Oparah). This meet-not-so-cute turns into a conversation where Dom confesses he’s meeting his ex for dinner. Coming off her own breakup, Yas decides to help Dom out and crashes his meal. This begins a day full of adventure and surprises as Dom and Yas get to know each other and open themselves up to the possibility of loving again.
Rom-coms may have a particular formula, but that doesn’t mean they have to be boring. Rye Lane proves there is some freshness to be had within the genre. Debut director Raine Allen-Miller uses the vibrancy of South London in a unique behind-the-scenes way to provide the perfect backdrop for this film. The original screenplay from writers Nathan Bryon and Tom Melia gives Jonsson and Oparah something special to work with. They are delightful, and their chemistry is a joy to witness on screen. With all the right ingredients, including a very special cameo, Rye Lane is colorful, charming, and irresistible.
