Last year was a bit of a slow year for documentaries. Those who got recognition at the 96th Academy Awards were worth the spotlight, but there weren’t many that caught people’s eye beyond a select few. Roleplay could change the tide for 2024.
During Women’s History Month (and beyond), Roleplay deserves your attention. Not just your attention but the young men and women around you. On the Tulane University campus, there was/is a problem with sexual assaults. In response, a group of Tulane students and teachers crafted an immersive play to shed light on the sexual violence and assaults women were/are being subjected to. The documentary covers around five and a half years in the creation, practice, and execution of the play.
The journey of Roleplay is special to witness. Beyond the lens of social media, we don’t have much in the way of telling what young American life is. This generation deserves to have their experiences shared. During filming, the students work through trepidation and anxiety to make their eclectic voices heard. Though the bedrock of the play and film rails against sexual assault, they also touch on the social strata, racism, homophobia, and substance addition that plague Tulane. They learn about themselves and their school during this arduous journey. If you went to college however many moons ago, you’ll see yourself, your friends, and your old campus through what’s currently happening in Tulane.
If you’re currently in college or are on the way, Roleplay will be an eye-opening experience. If you’ve been a victim or violated, it’s important to know that there are other people who have gone through the same experiences. And if you’re someone who wants to do better but you aren’t sure of where to start, Roleplay is a great place to begin.
Roleplay is now playing at the SXSW Film & TV Festival.
