He didn’t choose superhero life. Superhero life chose him.
You would think that everyone wants to be a superhero if given a chance to choose. But what happens when the superhero life chooses you? That’s pretty much what happens in the trailer that just dropped for DC’s Blue Beetle, and yes, it looks as wild as it sounds.
While the upcoming film marks the cinematic debut of Blue Beetle, the character has an extensive history dating back to 1939. Over the years, three distinct individuals have assumed the role of Blue Beetle, with Ted Kord being the most prominent iteration introduced in the 1960s. The upcoming live adaptation, helmed by director Angel Manuel Soto, will feature Jaime Reyes as Blue Beetle, played by Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña.
The synopsis:
Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.

The trailer looks like a thrill! Earlier this year, we learned that Blue Beetle aligns with James Gunn’s plans to restore DC to its former glory. If what we saw in the trailer is any indication, DC is on track to be just as competitive as Marvel regarding box office hits.
And while this isn’t our first Latino superhero to hit the big screen (shout out to Miles Morales), this is our first live-action Latino superhero, which adds an extra level of excitement.
Starring alongside Maridueña are Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood) as Jaime’s grandmother, Nana, Damían Alcázar (Narcos) as his father, Elpidia Carrillo (Mayans M.C.) as his mother, Bruna Marquezine (Maldivas) as Jenny Kord, Raoul Max Trujillo (Sicario) as Carapax, with Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (Monarch) as Victoria Kord, and George Lopez (Rio) as Jaime’s Uncle Rudy. The film also stars Belissa Escobedo (American Horror Stories) as Jaime’s sister, Milagro, and Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows) as Dr. Sanchez.
