Earlier this year, the world grew a bit dimmer as we said goodbye to a man who exemplified Black excellence and elegance. Actor, activist, director, and diplomat are just a few words to describe the legendary Sidney Poitier. To honor his life and legacy, Apple TV+ brings us Sidney, a documentary in collaboration with the Poitier family, by producer Oprah Winfrey.
Directed by Academy Award nominee Reginald Hudlin, this documentary will chronicle Poitier’s life, including his rise to fame as a trailblazing actor, filmmaker, and active participant in the Civil Rights Movement. His impact on Hollywood and this country is explained and explored through interviews with Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Robert Redford, Barbara Streisand, Spike Lee, Lenny Kravitz, and many more.
Along with the interviews, we’ll get to hear about Sidney from the man himself as he shares his personal feelings regarding his initial treatment in Hollywood and his determination to see a change in representation in front of and behind the camera. It should be a fitting tribute to a man who, as mentioned in the trailer, came to the earth to move it.
